classic hollywood:

I am a total nerd when it comes to the history of pretty much anything. My favorite non-war history has always been classic hollywood (http://www.mptvimages.com/). Of course the 60s & 70s are phenomenal as well and if you know me at all you know i'd do anything to be in the hippie culture but nonetheless, classic hollywood is just so rad to me. i think it's because when i was growing up, my mother would always say, "it's all about culture darling" in a hysterical new-york/french accent because it was supposed to be a sophisticated sounding voice. she still says that but now i don't roll my eyes at her. instead i appreciate her love that she gave to me for things that are rooted in history. so needless to say, i grew up watching movies like gone with the wind, to kill a mockingbird, hello dolly, calamity jane, a tree grows in brooklyn, bringing up baby and because of that i know a ton of old actors and actresses from the 30s-60s. i love everything about them: the mystique, the glamour, the debonair attitudes, the simplicity of it all. i'm such a dork i know but i love it. i also know that the portrait these movies create about life is not true in the slightest measurement. these stories are as close to cinderella or sleeping beauty as real life can get: the women are always pursued, the men are always perfect, the story always ends pleasantly.
last night after church eating hummus with tyler, billy, emma, rachel and myself, tyler asked the girls what our 'must's' are for guys that we like. now, i know that my man won't be perfect like humphrey bogart or paul newman and i do not want him to be but my 'must's' would be that he has to be a passionate nerd for history, culture, the arts (photography, literature, paintings, music, poetry) and likes to take the time to enjoy those things. if he didn't, it would be quite difficult because i wouldn't want to make him watch a carey grant movie but i also wouldn't want to enjoy something that i love so much without him. i agree that he has to be opposite of me to some extent but i hope that he and i will have the same interests. i'm glad i've grown up on classic hollywood and i'm also glad that i know the difference between reality and once upon a time.
