i read donald miller's blog about j.d. sallinger's recent death and got to thinking about why it is that people, myself included, don't pay attention to things or each other until they are dead? (either literally or physically.) this has been the case for so many poets, artists, authors as well as personal friends, blessings and gains. degas, the beautiful painter, was unimportant until 50 years after his death. keats, the romantic poet, was a man of lower social standings and due to that, his poems were thought to be rubbish until years after his death. this is an interesting cycle and i think it shows how oblivious we humans are to what is directly in front of us. i wonder what poets and painters of this generation are being looked past? anyway, back to sallinger. i was introduced to catcher in the rye in high school but i didn't find it worth my time for some reason or another. now that he is dead, i am going to read it. if he didn't die, would i have remembered to read the book? i don't know. but i do know that i don't want to wait until something or someone is gone to appreciate them. well, not much purpose in this blog at all besides stating that i am going to read catcher in the rye and to remind myself to be intentional with love.
